In this tough economy, everyone likes to save money and one way to save money is do-it-yourself projects.  When it comes to truck projects, a Roll-on bed liner is a great do-it-yourself project for truck owners, especially those with older truck who do not want to invest in the more expense slide in liners or professional spray-on liners.  Installing a bed liner can stop the downhill deterioration of an older truck better and make it look a whole lot better.  These Bed liners are really easy to do and here are a few trade Tips that may help your bed liner job go faster and smoother.

  • Tip 1 - Use paint cleaner before applying the Bed liner.  Before you start sanding the truck bed, use a regular automotive paint cleaner that is contains a wax and grease remover or else the wax and grease may get ground into the paint.
  • Tip 2 - Use coarse abrasives to get a really rough sanded surface where you will be applying the bed liner paint. You will need to really dull that surface before you paint as this is the key to a coating that really sticks.
  • Tip 3 - Use a Paint Roller to apply your bed liner - it works great.  A roller applied bed liner finish looks like it was sprayed on. Bed liner paint is very thick. It settles as it dries and the average Joe cannot tell the different between a roller finish and a spray on finish.  It looks that good.
  • Tip 4 - Don't skimp, use 5 quarts.  A gallon is usually not enough to cover most truck beds. You will need at least 5 quarts. One reason professional liners are more durable is the coatings are very thick.  A professional spray on liner takes several gallons.
  • Tip 5 - Get the right paint.  All bed liner paints are not equal. Herculiner, Plasti-Kote and Duplicolor are the major bed liner paint brands. Each one has its unique quality so check out the differences to find out which one is best for your truck and application.

A Roll-on bed liner is a fast way to improve the looks of your truck. It is a lot more affordable than a professional liner and it is not hard to get it done.  Like most projects, preparation and choosing the right product are key elements of a successfully job.
