The Toyota Tundra truck was introduced in Toyota's 2000 model production year as a full size pickup truck and the replacement for the Toyota T100 Truck. It was initially introduced with nine (9) configurations and three (3) trim styles. The 2000 Tundra Truck was available in a choice of a two door regular cab or four door extended cab with the option of an economical V6 engine or the more powerful V8. The Tundra presented a high quality pickup that could compete with Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge.
Between the model years 2001 to 2003, all Tundra models were given a new front and rear fascias and other upscale options and trim packages. The everyday Tundra truck was transformed into a more powerful and responsive vehicle with Off road options packages, whilst a new Step Side model transformed the style from basic truck to a sporty utility vehicle. For convenience and comfort, the "Tundra Limited" trim was enhanced with a power sliding rear window.
In 2004 and 2005, a Tundra truck double cab, four door model was added to the lineup. This double cab model was upgraded with a 60/40 split bench front seat which created sufficient cab space for 6 passengers. It is also worth noting that the Tundra engines for the 2005 model year were reworked to produce more horsepower. The new V6 engine deliver 245 horsepower and the V8 produced 282 horsepower. The Tundra Interior and exterior finishes only received a little more polish and could be ordered with an enhanced audio system and navigational system. The Tundra's ample power and speed combined with its crisp handling and smooth ride made it very popular among truck owners who had limited towing needs but desired every day driving comfort and convenience.
There were no significant changes in the Tundra truck for the 2006 model year. However, the Tundra 2007 model year delivered a larger, completely redesigned Tundra ready to compete in the more commercially based pickup truck marketplace. For model prior to the 2007 model year, even though the Tundra had become a favorite with recreational pickup truck owners with an occasional need to work it on the weekends, the Tundra was not readily accepted by truck owners who needed a pickup truck rugged enough for every day towing and hauling. However, the 2007 Tundra model addressed some of the major concerns expressed by truck owners who use their pickup trucks for commercial business. To address the concerns the following were added:
- A new front suspension system with coil over shocks
- A six inch wider and more unyielding frame
- Standard 18 inch wheels and a fully boxed front half.
For 2007, more Tundra truck configurations were possible with three (3) cab styles: 1) regular cab, 2) double cab and (3) the crew cab. There were also three (3) engine choices, three (3) bed lengths and a choice of either 4 x 4 or 4 x 2 wheel drive configuration. By 2007, the Tundra truck was recognized as the largest truck in Toyota's history at over 19 feet long.
Recent year improvements have launched the Toyota Tundra as a true commercial pickup truck with all the power, torque and hauling capabilities of the competition while integrating a stunning exterior and almost car like interior for a comfortable ride.
